First Beta Release of Serpentine?

Post by Shivaxi »

I found this old map dating back to 1998 titled "Stranded!" by Mark Hartman. The map only works on the 220 version of Unreal, and it came with something called SBETA1.u. According to the readme for that file, it's the first beta release to the Serpentine mod, with external links to websites that no longer exists. All that the SBETA1.u file contains is a simple pistol called Govt1911. Anyone know anything about this?

Also, I converted the map to work for 224 and beyond. However, I couldn't get the SBETA1.u file to work correctly in current Unreal versions, so I replaced the Govt1911 wep with the automag. I included all the original files in the zip file though, so if you have 220, check it out.

My converted map is renamed to Stranded!-mk2.unr. And check out the SBeta_Info.txt readme...it's quite interesting.

Wow, nice find! I've never heard of a beta version of Serpentine before...

It's weird, in UTPT, it shows as a "Mesh", and not a "LODMesh". Exporting it causes crashing and WOTGreal won't even load it without crashing. I'll give UModel a whirl...

EDIT: Ok UModel won't load it. What's different between these old meshes, and the ones used in Unreal today? Something about "Vertmesh" keeps popping up in UModel's Log...

Code: Select all

Disregard that previous post, I fixed the pistol and now it works with all versions of Unreal :)

The "Mesh" is not an old issue with UTPT, i saw it many times when i still used the program, its just a LODMesh or SkeletalMesh that UTPT can''t read so it calls the format a "Mesh" insteat of LOD/Skeletal Mesh.
If you open the package in Ued you'll see that the mesh works just fine and looks the same as all the other LOD/Skeletal Meshes in the package.

It never loaded in 227 or even 225 because of code that was only used in v220 and not compatible with versions greater than 220. If I tried, UnrealED would just crash on the spot.

Yes, but i think you misunderstood me GizMaster :P I was talking about that the if UTPT shows  you a normal Skeletal or LODMesh in "Mesh" format has nothing to do whether its 220, 227, 225f or other.

But er.. I think we're slowly going off-topic like this, so lets continue with the subject :P

Do you mean the original version, or my universal version?

The level in question has now been PROPERLY ported to Unreal 224 and above. Instead of replacing the pistol with automag, I replaced it with the final Serpentine's 1911 pistol and the map works just fine. ;) Enjoy, the proper version of Stranded. :P
