Best tool to extract and pack *.u files
Best tool to extract and pack *.u files
I'm mostly sure i'm posting in wrong place, so i'm sorry for it. I wanna edit some sound files in Deus Ex and found some half-working tool to extract audio from *.u files. But no idea how to pack it back so i could hear my work in game. Thx for advice.
Re: Best tool to extract and pack *.u files
Found this app, but it only unpacks the files - UTPT
Maybe there is a tool that can unpack and pack back stuff.

Re: Best tool to extract and pack *.u files
UTPT is old and unsupported now and it doesn't extract models well at all (they have errors). There are more advanced extractor programs like umodel (and whatever the successor is called again).
However, I don't think there's anything that can pack back files, you have to use unreal editor for that. There is the deus ex sdk mind you and other things. I don't know myself of an external program that can repack sounds. Well only for outdated beta versions for Unreal they had a separate audio program that used special .ufx files that the engine supported. But they dropped it in favor of just plain wav files inside unreal packages (and dedicated "uax" packages).
Unfortunately the Unreal packages aren't simple pak files like with other games that just have different headers or something. Its an entirely new format that works kind of like binary with the engine.

I wanted to give a link to the DeusEx SDK
https://www.moddb.com/games/deus-ex/dow ... dk-v1112fm
And UnrealEd 2.2 for DeusEx
https://www.moddb.com/games/deus-ex/dow ... for-deusex
but found these to be potentially dangerous tools, that require some experience
Re: Best tool to extract and pack *.u files
Yes but even plain unrealed that came with unreal and most games can be considered that. If he wants to use it he should consult some documentation/tutorials.Reborn wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2023 9:00 pmI deleted my previous post

But it seems to be the only way for what he wants. As long as he doesn't play online and modifies regular files it should be fine as long as he keeps backups. Otherwise he should learn how to mod properly.
