License/terms for UT and servers

UT now belongs to the "old" Unreal as well. Supporting it for OpenGL and Sound its time to put up a board now.

License/terms for UT and servers

Post by thenewkgb »

I sound a bit crazy, what with wanting an Azure server running custom mods with UT as an experiment (esp. being the laziest man here.)

When you download Unreal Tournament from Steam, terms and conditions apply to how you use it. I wondered how owners of servers can upload UT?

How do owners of UT make two copies (one client/one server)?

I read the Unreal (Not UT) license agreement. The Unreal EULA licences the software to be installed on one computer. So if you run a server from the computer you play the game on, you are covered by that license.

If you install the game on a second computer, for example a dedicated server, you technically need another license.
Most will probably not bother, but if you want to live by the rules of the EULA, you need to buy a copy of Unreal for every computer you install it on.

Thanks Hyper.

With Steam - can I pay for two copies? Or would I need to explicitly email them asking for two copies?

Usually you pay for one copy and "Play" or "Uninstall" but never "Buy again".

Being somewhat lazy, I can't run a server yet. I've read a fair few terms and conditions but every time I did I said to myself "I need a lawyer!"

I thought UT wasn't possible to be bought on Steam anymore, period.

Yeah, Epic stopped selling the Unreal series on Steam. You can only buy existing keys through resellers until their stock dried up. And they can ask any price. And then I mean, ANY price.

Cheapest ways to get licenses for Unreal games is the secondhand market.
